Adjusting In a New City After a Move

Furniture arranged, decorations up, boxes unpacked, your move was a success! Now that you’re settling into your new home it’s time to get settled into the city. Uprooting your life and moving somewhere new is hard enough…especially if you’re new citydoing it by yourself, but it can also be (and hopefully is) a great thing! By now you’ve hopefully found the grocery store, pharmacy, and other basics; but what are the best ways to go out and meet new people and get to know the city?

A new job is a common way to meet people; ask your colleagues for their recommendations of restaurants, bars, attractions, etc. They might even want to join you or get a group together and all go out. This is a great way to break the ice and get to know your colleagues while finding new places that you’ll like.

Have any mutual friends in the area? Maybe some of your friends or family know somebody that you can connect with. I’m sure they’d have some insight for you!

There’s always something new that we want to learn or try but maybe just didn’t have time for before. Well now you do! Go find a class, club, etc that you want to sign up for. Not only will this give you the chance to learn and do something new but also a good opportunity to make some new friends and acquaintances!

Speaking of finding something to join, there’s probably a gym or two in your surrounding area. If you’re working out on a regular or even semi-regular schedule you may meet people with a similar routine. Get to talking and you could find yourself having a new workout partner!

Do you like to read, write, go on walks? Check out the local parks! You can do any of those activities there whiling taking in some fresh air.

Even if you aren’t making friends everywhere you go at least you have the opportunity for interaction. All you have to do is explore and have fun!  You can meet people anywhere, you just have to be open to it. Being new to the area gives you a good ice breaker by asking for recommendations. Even if you didn’t make the move alone hopefully these ideas help you get comfortable and happy in your new home and city!
